Sponsors volunteer to buy gifts for a family living with cancer so they can have a merry Christmas. The families who take part in the Adopt-A-Family program make wish lists of items they want and need. The Columbus Cancer Clinic was founded in 1921 and merged with LifeCare Alliance in 2005. But she can tell by the wrapping that she got a skillet.</p><p>“I’ve been wanting one of those forever,” she said, laughing under her “Faith over Fear” face mask. “I do quite a bit of cooking. There’s nothing like having a good skillet. I just haven’t had the funds to go get one.”</p><p>Other items on her Christmas wish list included a comforter for her bed and a pair of sweatpants.</p><p>She said her Christmas would be “very dull” if it weren’t for Adopt-a-Family because she doesn’t have any family in the Columbus area. </p><partner-banner util-module-path=”elements/partner” fluid bottom lazy class=”spacer-large” min-height=”250″ outstream></partner-banner><p>“I probably would sit home by myself feeling sorry for myself,” she said. “I don’t have to do that now.”</p><p>In fact, many of these families wouldn’t get any gifts for Christmas if it weren’t for the Adopt-a-Family program, Gehring said.</p><p>“They don’t have support that can buy it,” he said. “It would be pretty ugly.”</p><p>Gehring and his wife adopt a family each year anonymously, and this year they sponsored an eight-person family that has two people battling cancer.
