Mary Jane Reilly sought out an outstanding hospital for her multiple myeloma treatment, specifically a hospital with a plasma cell myeloma cancer center. A mother of teenage twins, Mary Jane wanted to not only survive her diagnosis, but she also wanted to further advance cancer research and medical science by participating in a clinical trial. After her first meeting with Dr. Niesvisky, the Medical Director for the Weill Cornell Medicine Multiple Myeloma Center, she knew she had to enroll in a cutting-edge trial he had suggested. Mary Jane received top-notch therapy, and within two months, her numbers had improved significantly and she was on the path to recovery. Mary Jane’s debilitating back and rib pain also began to subside and she was soon able to move around without assistance. Ten months after starting the trial, Mary Jane’s multiple myeloma was in complete remission. Mary Jane shares that “there’s life after diagnosis,” and why she will always be grateful to Dr. Niesvisky and the team at the Multiple Myeloma Center for helping her to continue to thrive and enjoy life after cancer.

My doctor said to me in the first meeting after he told me that I had myeloma, that there was no known cause and no known cure and I thought ‘Well that’s crazy. I made the appointment with Dr. Niesvizky. I went with my husband to hold my hand and my brother to take the notes. He told me about a trial that he was doing. He called it the Car-BiRD, and by the end of my meeting with Dr. Niesvizky, I said ‘When can I start?’ I have to get into this trial. I want to be a part of this. I want to make a difference in cancer research and I want to live. Clinical trials allow us to move the field forward to try to achieve a cure, and in addition if they’re are participating in the clinical trial, they are getting more than standard of care. They’re getting top-notch, leading edge type of therapy. Within two months my numbers were down by more than half. One morning all of a sudden I was able to get out of bed by myself and I said to my husband, ‘I’m up. I didn’t need you.’ So my back pain subsided. My rib pain subsided. Within 10 months of treatment I was in remission and I’ve been in complete response ever since. My twins are graduating from eighth grade and I’m able to be a part of that. I was able to be at their confirmation and to be there when they win awards, and there’s life after diagnosis, and I’m forever grateful to Dr. Niesvizky and the team at the Cornell Multiple Myeloma Center.
