Dodgers’ Dave Roberts salutes St. Francis football coach during “Stand Up To Cancer” campaign

There was a touching moment before Game 3 of the World Series when baseball players, fans and coaches hold up signs during a “Stand Up To Cancer” campaign. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts honored St. Francis football coach Jim Bonds, who is going through a difficult battle with cancer.

Bonds, a former quarterback who played at UCLA, has been the head coach at St. Francis for 20 years.

Bonds, 51, was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma cancer during the spring of 2018 and after treatment and a hopeful diagnosis, he returned to coach the 2018 and 2019 football seasons, and was speaking with his team during zoom meetings in March after the coronavirus shut sports down.

But over the summer, Bonds’ cancer returned and the fight has been a difficult one. St. Francis High School is holding a prayer at the school on Wednesday for their beloved coach that will be live streamed, and his family has posted updates on their social media accounts, asking for prayers with the hashtag #bondsstrong.
