Blood Cancer Treatment with Bone Marrow Transplant (in Hindi) -Dr.Rahul Bhargava, Fortis Hospital

Dr. Rahul Bhargava is the Director and Head of Department of Haematology, Haemato-Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplants at FMRI, Gurgaon and heads the Institute of Blood Disorder, the only super-specialised blood cancer centre in India, a unique initiative dealing specifically with blood and blood related disorders. Dr. Bhargav gives an overview of Bone Marrow Transplant procedure and demystifies the concept for the layman, explaining it as a process of killing the cancer-affected cells and replacing them with a batch of healthy blood cells. He categorises Bone Marrow Transplants into two types. First type is Autologous transplant, where blood cells are procured from patient’s own body. The other type is Allogenic transplant in which the donor can be a sibling, matched unrelated donor or a half matched donor. He summarises by stating that bone marrow transplant is no more a last resort treatment for blood cancers and can cure 60% of blood disorders like Aplastic Anaemia, Multiple Myeloma, Relapsed Lymphoma and Acute Leukemia, if treated at the right time.
